I finally found a 1973 4001 in really great condition! The serial number is ME1631, which makes it a May 1973 build date. It has all the the pre-transition features on it, such at the checkered binding, full MOP inlays, toaster neck pickup and split tailpiece. It's a jetglo model and the finish is really impeccable, expecially considering its age. I was told there were belt buckle marks on it, but they look more like very light swirls or light scratches that could be buffed out rather than gouges in the finish.

The best part was that it was delivered yesterday afternoon when some friends came over for some jamming. It was immediately opened and inspected, then plugged into my amp for a test run and I christened it with some Smithereens.

It sounds like the .0047 capacitor has been bypassed. Man does it growl! It sounds fuller than my 4003! However, I don't plan on gigging with it since I'd hate to ruin such a fine specimen of that era.

Are they MOP-inlays, uh... without the original (?) Mother of Pearl....?

I.e, the milky stuff Post-72? The original stuff was a clear, yellowy stuff with flakes of silver in it.

PS nice bass!

Hey Ron, I remember seeing a mint '73 Jetglo 4001 just like yours on Gbase a few months back. It was priced at over three grand. Are we talking about the same 4001?

Since we're limited to 36kb on the photo size, that's as big as I could make them. Maybe I can drop the resolution a bit on the camera.

Sergio, I didn't see this bass before, so I don't know if it's the same one you saw before. All I can see is it looks very clean for its age.

Ron, you have to gig with that bass!

You need a photo editing program that lets you resize pic, then also save them to a lower quality (higher compression) setting.

Or, Peter lifts the 36kb image limit, and we contribute to the hosting fees!

I'd gladly help out.
