4001C64 MapleGlow question?

My naive question is basically for John Hall.
I would like to buy another C64 MG, but I don't understand why the maple selected for this vintage bass isn't hand selected for the nicest wood grain finish. I haven't to date seen one with really nice grain on the body, while 4003's I've seen have beautiful wood grain on the bodies.
I would think for the extra money, besides the vintage p/u's and bridge the body wood grain would be choice, as in this example.
