I'm not really into modified Rics, but I do have to say that this does look pretty interesting.

Oddly enough, I think Gary play a refinished Shadow at his reunion benefit. Look at the black markers.

I hope it's the same one. I'd hate to see two stripped Shadows. It looks better with the custom paint job.

At first I thought it must be the same bass, but the eBay seller says "Gary was diagnosed with cancer during that time I started the project of painting this bass for him." He definitely had cancer by the time the benefit concert took place.

I wonder what the origin of the natural finished bass is in that picture that John posted?
I initially thought it must be the same bass too but as well as the comments from the ebay seller, the natural one doesn't have chequered binding.
Do all shadows have chequered binding?....If they do then the natural one wouldn't have been a shadow originally but what about the black markers on the board....aren't they unique to shadows?

Marty, I don't think you can see if there is or there isn't checkerboard binding in that pic of the stripped bass. I'll bet it has checkerboard binding: all Shadows have it, and only Shadows have black dot markers. On the other hand, we've seen one-offs and prototypes appear here and there with odd features, like the double-bound Jetglo on eBay, or the Shadow prototype with triangular inlays, so anything is possible.

Well Strater's bass sold for a mere $2000.00. If I hadn't have already paid my taxes, That bass would have been mine without question. Even my wife, who knows what a fan of Starcastle I am, said she wanted me to get it. The most sickening thing is knowing what much of my money went for instead. Better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all....
