BEATLEOLOGY MAGAZINE 63 HOFNER?

Post by carrie_reyes »

Has anyone else seen the latest Issue?
It has a supposedly original 1963 lefty Hofner Beatle Bass ,just like Sir Paul's Bass, in every way.
Tony Capizzi is the proud papa in NY.
Wonder how many exist? Is there a way to find out?Is this for real?

Appraised for $50,000 , wow wow wow!

Also a guy named Jeff, sure does some beautiful work on Beatle type guitars! Amazing lil magazine from Canada!
Loving the Beatles is a full time hobby isn't it?

I think Paul's is a 62. I think the confusion over what year his was made is because it was presented to him in 63. I think the neck and finish were different in 63. Also the tuners were mounted individually in 63 while the 62 they were on strips.

50K. That is a boat load of money

Paul's is almost certainly a '63, someone down the line was able to check one of the pots in Paul's Hofner, and it was from 1963, I don't know what week....someone else may chime in on this.

So far only 5 or 6 left-handed 500/1's made before 1964 have surfaced, including the two that McCartney played ....pretty rare birds.

IIRC Tony's bass was actually made BEFORE McCartney's by a little bit....

It says Pauls bass is "Coded 283" in the article. What does that mean?
Serial number?

Look at those Rickenbackers (set lists on the 325 and everything...!) Hofner has a set list on it too.

Thanks for the kind words Carrie! I'm glad you enjoyed the article and the photos.

I just finished up a Clapton Blackie replic strat complete with correct painted flight case, so I not only do Beatles guitars but I do like to do those too.

If you'd like to see more pics, go to photobucket.com and put in fabgear as the username and guest as the password. It'll take you to my public albums.

Again, many thanks!

Thanks Alex. Yup, I still have it. Has an all black case too.

I think I'm probably going to put it up on the ol' Ebay in a week or so along with a spare Rocky strat I did and the Blackie once it's all set(waiting on it's strap that matches one it had in 78).

If Paul's is in fact a 63, why the V62 reissue?

V62 RI's were issued after the v63.The V63's were issued with individual tuners...oops...when they found out Pauls had strips they re/reissued it and called it a V62 with "correct" Strip tuners.
Some refer to Pauls as a 62/63 anyway. Both years have strips, vintagelly( is that a word?)speaking.

It is a fact that Pauls is a 63 with 283 (28th week of 1963)Pot Dates (Mandolin Brothers provided this when it had its check up in 1994)...another good question "is/was there ever a SN (all Selmers had them)found on it (back of headstock) or is/was it worn away through the mists of time? 99% sure it has a body date stamp inside the body.Get a dental mirror and let us know JH !

Perhaps the Queens presentation bass was an exception ...John Hammel might know.
IMO ,by the limited number of these , it is entirely possible TC's bass may have been meant for Macca, as a back up bass....another story.

They mass produced them in 1964... "THE BASS " became more popular again after the latest tours.Hofner is not known for documentating their basses. But a few rare lefties are now being recognized as Holy Grails, rarist of the rare.
Dare I say as hard to find as as 'the 28', 58 325s.
