I recently visited Nashville and stumbled upon what I was told was a 1968 Rickenbacker 370/12 LEFT-HANDED. I'm a lefty and this was an extroardinary find so I paid $1600 for it. It will ship to me on Monday (they had to flip the nut for me .. they former owner had it strung righty. BUT! The guitar turns out to be an '89!!!Serial # research has revealed the truth. All issues with the store aside, what is this guitar worth? Am I being ripped off? It was also owned by Dan Seals (folk singer guy), but I'm not sure how much I care about that. It has vintage-style toaster PU's.

Well, they really DID misrepresent the guitar. They should make an adjustment to the price. Dan Seals? Thats real nice but they still charged you too much. I'd say that 900. - 1000. would be more like it. John

Jesse: I am very much interested in the details of this instrument as they relate to Dan Seals. Is there any way to validate the claims made by the vendor that "England Dan" owned this Rickenbacker? Please fill us in.

I'm not really sure how I would validate their claims. Supposedly they have paperwork from him (it was on consignment). I could call and ask.

I've actually made some surprising discoveries (I only received the guitar by mail a few days ago).
This guitar has the electronics of the RM limited edition, but the compressor is currently broken. I've tried replacing the battery, but the compressor just makes a whooshing sound that has some correlation to how hard I strum. Image Not very pleasing to the ear, though.

I'm currently debating having it modded for standard 370/12 passive electronics, or having the compressor fixed. Does anyone have any opinions on which way I should go? I'm more interested in tone/playability than collectibility, and I seem to be losing sparkle on the passive switch settings (since the electronics all route through the same larger-than-normal board, active setting or no.)

Any input would be appreciated. Would the compressor sound really cool were it working?

Jesse: Why don't you enter a note under the "Ask A Rickenbacker Luthier" topic letting Mark know of your post here. He may have some suggestions for you.
