Photos for book

Hey guys (and gals?), I'm starting to assemble photos for possible inclusion in my forthcoming book on Rickenbacker basses. I hope to shoot as many as possible at the Columbus Confluence, but I'm sure I'll need many many more eventually.

I'm hoping I can prevail upon the members to provide publication-quality photographs of Rick basses that you own, previously owned, or in some other way documented.

The ones that are most sought are the unusual color morphs and models. For example, that lovely Mapleglo 2060 that was discussed back in February, old 4000 basses, 8-stringers, double-neckers, and just about any Sea Green bass, etc.

I know many of you know where I can find photos on websites and such, but I'm looking for original photos where I won't have to chase down copyright issues. I hope to tap Rickenbacker, and maybe POR and Mike Parks, but first, I want to see what you have.

Now, as far as compensation goes, I HOPE to be able to hand out free copies of the book to those who help out, but I don't have a publisher (or even have the thing written) yet, so I can make no promises. Any photo used will be credited to the photographer and owner of the instrument.

So, if you think you can help out, please e-mail me direct at pboyer at finescale dot com and we'll discuss. I'm looking forward to meeting you folks in Columbus.

Thanks, Chris, but first maybe we should discuss "publication quality" photos. Digital pictures that look great on screen, sometimes don't have enough "information" to survive the process a photo goes through to go into print. I'm not sure I have it all clear, but for publishing, the larger the file the better. What happens is that a digital shot must be transformed into CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black), and that process ends up shrinking the acceptable reproduction size drastically. I'll be shooting TIF or Raw files with my 8-meg Nikon digital to assure that the photos will have the guts to be reproduced full page or trunk (two-page spread). Usually, digitals shot with point-and-shoot 3.5-meg cameras can't be reproduced much larger than wallet-size in publications.

All this is different if you should have good-quality old-fashioned color prints or slides, of course, but I suspect most of the book will be composed of digital imagery.

In any case, please e-mail me first and we'll discuss what you have.

Paul-

I will re-shoot your ex 4003JG FLBT with a Nikon 5 mp.

Now if I can learn to play the darn thang...

I take it files like these can't easily be emailed.

I'm not sure either, and that's why I wanted to discuss submissions before people started firing them off to me. I think the best way is to have large jpegs or TIFs e-mailed separately (not multiples in one e-mail). If you have dial-up modem, you're probably screwed, but if you have DSL or cable modem, it can be done. We can try an experiment. Shoot one to me and we'll see!

Thanks, Jared, and it will be good to see the old black beauty again.

Paul, I'll e-mail you a list of my basses off-Forum and let you tell me what ones you would like pictures of. I'm guessing that the 1977 4000 FL BG is one for sure ... Image Time to get the OM-2 out!

If you have room in the book, it would be nice to have a photo or two of the current 4003 model in standard colors. They are great instruments and the ones folks are most likely to see on the street. Just a thought, and you may already have plans to do that. It will be nice to see the rarities, too!
