What should the original tuners look like on my Nov. '72 4001? The one's I have look like the current one's except they don't have Rickenbacker on them and they have red-top screws on them.

Just got out of bed (it's 3:00 p.m. local time - shame on me!) and saw your posts. To answer your question, I'm not 100% but I believe late '72 4001 basses had 2nd version (i.e. 'wavy-button') Grover tuners. You say the open-backed tuners you have sport 'red-top' screws. Sounds like a non-standard tuner version. Can you post a picture?

They put them on sporadically until around 1982 when they would run out of Klusons (or whatever they were called) but stopped for the most part around 73-74. I had a 75 with them and have seen 4003's as late as 82 with them stock from the factory.

Actually, this one plays better than any 4001 I've owned , so far!! Neck is perfect. Frets / inlays are dazzling! I believe the treble p/u is non-original, and the bass p/u is a newer hi-gain.
P/G needs replaced....she's a keeper, though...
