Hello

I will soon have in my possession a shiny new Ric 360/6 in mapleglo. This is my first electric guitar that I have owned. But like everyone else, I want another...but maybe something different altogether to a Ric.

I guess I was interested to know what you all have as your second fave guitar (not including rics). Your second fiddle fiddle.

I guess I am probably looking for something rockin rock rock rockin, like a strat or an sg, something on the opposite end of the spectrum. But I don't want to spend the earth either.

Simon, a Rick is rockin, rockin, rockin. If you want the other end of the spectrum, why not one or two of those $89.00 sharp-pointed Thrasher Specials? Beat 'em up! Fuzz and overdrive 'em out! Throw 'em away!

Then open the Rick case and behold beauty. Oh, yes, and take a deep breath of that great Rick smell.

Seriously, for a solid body, I'll unpack one of my two Fender Duo-Sonics (one dead-stock '59 sweety, and one that I custom-built with a Strat neck, Sherwood Green finish, three Lace Sensor pickups, abalone inlays, and all gold trim including a straight-loader Floyd Rose.)

For a hollow-body, my newly-minted Gretsch G6117T-HT Annie, with a TV Jones hummer in the neck position.

Then of course there's others.

But before you buy anything else, you need a Rick 12, either a 620 or a 660. Then you can stray a bit from the fold!

I also have a Gibson Les Paul Classic, Fender American Standard Strat, and Carvin AE-185.

I also have a Fender American Series Strat and a Gibson J-45 Rosewood.

I'd say you can't go wrong with a Stratocaster.

Well, you can go wrong depending on the build of the guitar itself, because I've played some really nice Strats, and some really lousy Strats, regardless of where they were made. It's a guitar you really can't buy sight unseen.

My '01 American Strat is like a no-nonsense workhorse to the refined beauty of my 360, and personally, I find it to be a good combination.

I have always wanted a Strat with Texas Special pickups, but for some odd reason I have never wanted one bad enough to spend the money. When it came down to crunch time the Ric won over the Strat.

Simon, beside my Rics, I have a Fender Aerodyne Telecaster which I love, a Danelectro Longhorn/Mandoguitar which I love, and Gretsch Electromatic -which is perfunctory.

Nab a Telecaster.

For 12 string sounds, I have a Phantom Guitarworks Teardrop XII.

Paul, I knew you'd say I needed another Ric as a second option. I also knew you'd be the first one to reply, how many hours do you spend in here anyway?

Roger, how is the Carvin?

Maybe I should just go down the Strat road, get a cheapie used MIM or MIJ. I'm definitely looking for a solid body.

I do have a thing for doublebound teles though, but I fear the tele is too close to the (for want of a better expression) jangly basket.

I mean, I probably should just buy a $89.00 flying V copy like you said, and smash it through the neighbours wall.

But I like Rics, I like quality instruments, made with care and love.

Hey Noel, whats the story with the Aerodyne Telecaster? I've not seen many of these around.

Simon, it's running in the background all day long at my office, and you can tell if I'm having a particularly busy day because I vaporize for awhile. In the evening, I check it a couple of times when I'm not practicing playing. But you just caught me "in" when your question hit.

Aerodynes: they're real love / hate guitars and basses.

All you are Rick guys and your seconds are Strats and Teles?

I do like the Danelectro option and the VOX XII 'drop.

I'm really partial to odd Fenders, and I've owned lots of them, as well as one of only 2 1971 (or maybe it was a '70) Les Paul Personals--the low-impedance ones with the microphone jack in the upper bout--in dark mahogany. Rare and worthless! And a whole slew of jazz and rockabilly boxes.

But Ricks demand respect!

Simon, the Aerodyne Tele is a great instrument. It's funny, I actually feel guilty when I play my non-Ric guitars. The Aerodyne, as you probably know has a P90 at the neck and a Tele p/u at the bridge (I'm told they are Texas Specials, but not advertised as such). It's very lightweight and looks great with its creme binding and painted peghead.

The combination of basswood body, maple neck, and rosewood board seems to work quite well with the pickup configuration. I can use it for stinging British leads, crying Pete Anderson type Tele lines, and clarion sparkle. I had a Tele '72 Custom (Keef style) before and, as much as I liked its look, couldn't connect with the tone -or the feel of the neck as you neared the 12th fret. The Aerodyne came out of the box as familiar feeling as a longtime lover.

Luckily Fender has recontinued the line after a brief legal wrangle.
They are CIJ too (crafted in Japan).

For something totally different, I suggest the Dano Longhorn. 31 Frets!

After my 330MG, my "second fiddle" is actually a flute. It's a "simple system, keyless" flute IE an "Irish" flute made for playing traditional music. Much, much fun.

Anyways, if/when I get a non-rick guitar, it would be either a Gibby 335 clone like a heritage or a hofner, or some offbeat Fender like a jazzmaster.
