Newbie with a 650D and tone questions...

Hi, all – it's been a while since I've been here! I'm a bass player that dabbles in guitar.

I had a chance to noodle on a 650D several years back, and have wanted one ever since. (My '80 Azureglo 4001 has been lonely.)

I had a 650D on order at MF last spring, but decided to back out of the order in the fall. Earlier this week, I was out on MF and was surprised to see they had them in stock! One impulse purchase later… It showed up today, and I'm impressed.

I was looking for a versatile guitar, and the 650D seems to fit the bill nicely. I've always had trouble with traditional Ric necks, which is how I ended up with an SG as my only electric a few years back. I'm glad to say I'm finding the 650D's neck to be as comfortable as I remembered from that brief exposure years ago.

I'm rather fond of jangle, but am not really in a position to score a 660/12 just to have it. I'm very willing to live with the limitations of what I can get out of a six. Can anyone comment on how to best occasionally achieve jangly tone with a 650D? Does anyone have any experience with the Janglebox and humbuckers like those in a 650D?

Kent, can't comment on the 650 D but have had great results from the JangleBox. It was well worth my investment. I use it primarily on my 360/12 but it has given an equally good response on my 360 V, 325, 660 and my others. It does the trick!

Carey, compared to any of my traditonal RICs, the 650D doesn't cut through the mix. Its a great guitar and I own a few different 650s.

Thanks, everyone!

John, could you please expand on your comment? It seems contradictory.

I think he just left out a qualifier, like "however".

Let me rephrase that. I have owned a number of 650s. The 650 is a great guitar. However (thanks Paul), compared to any of my traditional RICS, the 650 doesn't quite cut through the mix. :-)

That makes more sense - thanks!

I was fighting with the decision between a 650D and a 660 because of the pickups. I finally decided that the Dakota was probably a tad more versatile for a newbie and was a heck of a lot more affordable to boot.

I still want a 660... ;o)

Wow! I can't get enough of this 650D - it fits me like it was designed around my hands and body. (Scary thought.)

These are definitely the bargain of the century in both Rics and American made guitars!
