Ric basses are a bit noisy... I suggest trying a noise gate instead of changing the pu's.

I think they're great! The toaster has a smooth and "harmonic" sound, the horseshoe (with the .0047 cap) is very trebly and growly. However I remember they're noisy as the Hi-Gain, but who cares when you're playing?

So the horseshoe & toaster pickups are appreciably different from the pole-types? More "Squire-ific"?

Is it worth swapping poles for the vintage types? (My dealer said it'd be about $200, maybe less.)

Dan, IMHO the answer is: YES. My 4003 now sounds like the 4001v63 (even better using the .0047 cap)...
