R.E.M. was (and is) a special band for a long time for many reasons.... One of the things that was unique to them for a long time was that all of their songs were credited to: Buck, Berry, Mills, Stipe. In other words, all 4 of the originals, all songs, no more, no less. I once read an interview with them where that was credited with helping keep the band solidly together through the years.

Having said all that, Mr. Fowler is listed in the liner notes of "Document" (not as a songwriter) and certainly was an important member of their tours in the late 80's.

Reading the Emperor's advertisement, I would suggest that Mr. Fowler's role in the rock-n-roll history is there in at least one of R.E.M.'s tours; be your own judge on the value of one of his guitars, though.

The rest of the Emperor's post, about the Rickenbacker factory, is probably best judged by Mr. Hall, who has spoken.

R.E.M. was a huge part of my college experience. However, the guitar of their road rhythm guitarist isn't of a lot of value to me. Be your own judge, though....

Given the integrity of REM, I would be surprised if they allowed the auction to continue if they were aware of it and knew any of the information to be false, as it would be cashing in on their name and reputation -- which is Sterling.

I doubt, of course, anything will happen. If I thought it were completely true, I'd likely buy it outright, as would many other big REM fans.

Well, I guess there was a Buren Fowler who played guitar with them on tour. Still no proof he even played a Rickenbacker.

This item should be removed just like anyone selling any other misrepresented item.

This is a flip sale by The Emperor, because it was listed about a month ago. The previous seller did not say anything about custom order.

Well, I believe the first seller to be a reputable music store. The emperor guy should have kept to the original story and not embelished on it. Would have stood a better chance of selling it.

Item should still be removed as the custom order story misrepresents the guitar.

Unbelievable, it just gets better and better on that place.

I could take a piece of sand paper and do similar mods to my RICs. Would I want to? No.

Plus, playing a guitar 5 feet from salt water and air!? That's got to be beneficial.

I hesitate to post this... I have also played rhythm guitar with REM and I am willing to part with my custom, early 90's, 360 JetGlo with the special order checkered pickguard. This 360 is a "... rare bird" and you can tell it is a custom shop because the soundhole is bound. Also, the guitar has a special "Rick-o-Sound" option installed so that I could nail Fall On Me...

OK... I've actually only played rhythm guitar with my REM CD... And, after posting a similar ad on EBay, I've discovered that all modern 360s had a bound sound hole and "Rick-o-Sound." So, I suppose I'm foolin' anybody...

But I can still post PICs of my wife with the guitar, and she's better lookin than that gal any day of the week.
