Sharpie on plexie

I got Roger McGuinn to sign my pickguard last night and I want to preserve it as best I can. What should I do to protect it? I would really like to keep it on the guitar cause it looks so cool.

That's a good question. Would clear lacquer eat the Sharpie? I am not sure.

Why not get some clear plexi and make a copy of the original signed p.g. and put it over the singed one to protect it. Remove one grommet and it's just the right height. That's what I did with the 370-12 Spc. that Roger signed for me.

Clear lacquer would most certainly eat the sharpie and would age the plexi, too. Lacquer uses toluene as one of its solvents, which also happens to be the solvent in sharpie ink.

Here is the item in question: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v464/loverickbass/IM002601.jpg

John, yours mite be the best idea. Would heat and moisture build up in there over time? Is that a stupid question? I always think of the "what ifs". Just brain storming here.

John has a great idea. This type of rig will trap moisture, but plexi is moistureproof, so no big deal. The signature is another issue entirely. Keep the guitar in its case as much as possible. Sharpie has been known to fade to a light purple color given time and sunlight.

Roger's autograph has been under the clear plexi for about 5 yrs. and there is no problem. If you don't have the tools or wear-with-all to make one, I would be happy to do it for you,[no charge]. All you need to do is make a tracing of the p.g. including screw holes and send it to me by snail mail, don't trust computers to give the actual size. If you are interested, email me And I will Give you my address. Btw. love 381V69-12's.

I have a couple of signed upper guards of the Smithereens from the late 80's.

I used some clear photo protection adhesive that was made by Avery or 3M (can't remember).

I covered the gaurds and then cleaned up with a razor blade.

They still look like the day they were signed after 15+ years now.

That's another super idea! I'd go for the self-adhesive mylar laminating sheets. Get 'em at Staples. Avoid vinyl because of the plasticizers in it.

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to give the clear adhesive a shot. Seems like Karl has had success with it for some time now.

At the risk of boring some(I've told this before). I play bass in a(award-winningImage)Beatles trib/Sixties band, The Eggmen. Couple years ago we played a big 60s show at the Dell(yeah, the computer co.)Diamond ball park just north of here. It was us, The Grass Roots, The Turtles, and Herman's Hermits. It was HUGE fun and the chance of a lifetime to meet some heroes of mine. The stage was set up at second base just like The Beatles at Shea Stadium. Lots of laughs during the day with Flo and Eddie(The Turtles). The photo above was taken at the "Meet&Greet" before the show. I had Peter sign that Epiphone Rivoli as it's like the one Karl Green(60's Hermit bassist, and another lefty)played. When he saw it he said "Oh, an old EpEEphone".
