I had a band of 20 year old "kids" e-mail me and ask me to audition with them ... they are doing doors, Pink Floyd, Zeplin, ... I told them they were too retro for me ... man I am twice their age ...

I have always loved the Doors and have never really played with anyone who could do their songs, I know almost all of them just because I listen to them so much when I was a kid, they had some great bass players on their albums too.

the doors always annoyed me because they would tour WITHOUT a bass player ... keys covering bass ... yeecchh!!!

I talked with this Goth chick who was putting a band together ... she was going on and on about her project and how she was going to be successful and get signed and stuff ... I told her my main goal in the music business is to NOT get signed ... I can't afford the pay cut ...

Yeah - Why didn't these guys have a bass player on tour! Bass pedals don't work! Bothered me too! I think that is Joe Osborne on the records. He did a lot of sessions for Electra. Steve Winwood does the same.

I had a list of bass players who played with The Doors, Joe wasn't one of them that I know of anyway. Douglas Lubahn played a lot of the stuff, probably more than anyone else. Larry Knectel on 1st album uncredited, Jerry Sheff, Harvey Brooks, Ray Neopolitan played upright on some of their stuff. In a bass player mag interview Ray Brown said he played a little electric for them. No slouches there.

I liked the doors in the 60's ... but I lost interest in them a long time ago ... stuff like roadhouse blues is boring to play and boring to listen to ...

It was cool stuff to play then but now, yeah, too boring. And who could you get to play those tunes now? I guess only old guys like us. I know Bob and I are the same age and I think, Jeff, you're in the mix there too...

yep ... I'm 50 ... I like some of the old stuff ... but I like a lot of new stuff as well ... after years of playing the old stuff I find new music refreshing and exciting ...

Roadhouse blues is one of the most overplayed tunes in history and unfortunately a lot of people identify that song as being typical Doors music and is the only song a lot of people know, that was from the last album when he was almost dead (and constantly drunk or high and probably both) from alcoholism and was probably working at 10% of his previous capabilities, and had almost completely lost his voice. The other Doors and their engineer knew it would be the last album from him and were surprised to even finish it.
I'm thinking of tunes like "You're lost Little Girl" "Unknown Soldier" "When the Music's Over" "Wild Child" etc. No one writes or plays like that anymore. The great ones all died.
Some of their stuff was complex, almost jazzy and great and they took flak because of it from the Neanderthal rock critics of the day.

Their first four albums had one really good, really long epic song on it, "The Soft Parade" was the last like that I think.

now Bob you can't say all the good song writers are dead ... that reminds me of the old guy I met a few years ago who thought that polka was the only good music ... each era has good and bad music ... some ears more than others ... but there was some great music from that era ... but there was a lot of **** too ... there is some good music being produced today ... you have to sort through some **** to get to it ...

Polka is the only good music, I thought every one knew that.

nope there are 2 kinds of good music ... country and western ... or was it punk and metal???
