I finally have my very own Rick! She arrived yesterday and is a rather peachy MG 4003, born in March of this year.
I will bore you all to death and post photo's I took of her next to my 'faker (some of the cosmetic differences I ofund interesting) when I've worked out how to do it!!
Playing wise compared to the 'faker (alas, its my only frame of reference) the neck is wider slightly but much shallower and a hell of a lot faster. The 'faker has a much more rounded "C" type neck. Now, being that whoever made it needed a real Ric to rip off, are the late 70's basses similar to this neck description.

Congrats Rory! Will be interesting to see some pics.
You'll love the 4003. Solid instrument. MG is a beautiful finish.

I'd say no, your Rickenfaker neck is not representative of a real 4001 neck from the '70's. I've played the new 4003's. I own a few old 4001's. The typical 70's 4001 neck should be a little smaller around than your 4003. They were all hand sanded and vary a little from one to the next, but the necks are a little bit chunkier these days in order to remain stable under the higher tension of round-wound strings.
Congrats on the new Rick, Rory.

Thanks chaps. I actually can't stop looking at her, or playing her for that matter.
I have her sat on a stand next to the telly so I can gaze at her when the adverts are on.

It's a tough thing to explain to the women. But my wife was struck by the beauty of my new FG Laredo a couple months back, and when she finally heard me on a gig she *claims* to have heard my part...
Not so sure about that, but she understands a little more this disease called GAS.

LOL, I remember my first Ric well.
I bought it from Rose Morris in London in 1974. I was 17 years old & I met up with my girlfriend who was staying in London for the week end as well. We had been seeing each other for a couple of months but were not on ‘intimate’ terms, if you know what I mean.
Anyway that I night I was lucky enough to spend the night with my girlfriend on one side of the bed and an opened case with a 4001 JG on the other… I was in 7th heaven!
I think my girlfriend was more than a little hacked off with my affections for the new bass though. Well…. I had been drooling over the idea of the bass much longer than the girlfriend.
Enjoy the bass Rory.

Rory,
We're all barking mad, so the sooner you relax and embrace it, the more comfortable you're going to be.
Personally, I've never denied, nor questioned that I'm a little touched, as some of my fellow Forumites will tell you, I've this, umm, what in some circles may be unfairly characterised as a slight obsession with Fireglo ...... Hmmmmm Fireglo !!!!
