The ability to purchase a current production Vintage Series Bass would be better! I'll take a RM1999 Re-Issue, FireGlo John!

It was already made as a re-issue. Buy an FG V63 (or C64) and you will have it.

Ted, can't buy a V63 new either! And that's my point, has been for a while. Ric does not offer a vintage series bass. The C64's a nice guitar, they just make the headstock backwards!
Hey, what about that V68 idea....
(Send me those pics of your lap steel H-shoe project please

It's true you can't buy a new V63 any more, but there are some nice used ones out there,if you don't mind paying the bucks. Those basses have really started to go up in value. I've got a new C64FG on order to go along with mine too.

Shawn-
if ya cut the current plastic cover, it would move about everytime ya touched it. It is anchored by the height adj screws and has no support in the mid-section.
Better off with one of these...

The 4003 bass is essentially a 50's/60's design and it is pretty much a re-issue of the old 4001 ... I have 2 2001 4003 basses and I had a 1968 4001 ... the '68 had a thinner/weaker neck and weaker pickups ... the 2001 basses sill have many "Old Vintage Features" like ric-o-sound, mechanical mute, the old tailpiece, ... the main differences are the 4003 has a strong neck and strong pickups ... the '68 has checkered binding and a weak neck and weak pickups ...
I really disliked the pickups on the old '68 ... I put 2 new 4003 high gain pickups in it and it really came alive, and I took out the bass cut capaciter ... for gigging the 4003 is a much superior bass ... and it is still pretty much the same bass ...
the old '68 had a certain vibe and resonance that the new ones don't have but the I can set up my new ones with a flat new and get lower action all the way up and down the neck ...

Yeah Jeff, It's a classic like the P basses and J basses which were also both designed in the 50's and 60's and haven't really changed much either except that the quality has gone up with Rics. Wish I could say the same about the fenders.

Jeff ditto;
I love the look and feel of my 68, but playing live with an Ampeg stack, the newer 4000's (4001 or 4003) really scream.

4003's, flats and Ampeg 70's SVT's, match made in heaven.

An old one don't play or sound like a new one.
And that's the attraction.
