I have a 4001CS that gets played a lot- we gig pretty much every weekend. I've recently noticed it seems to have burnished (if that makes sense) or slightly discolored to almost a charcoal stain where my forearm rests on the body. Has anybody else experienced this? Any ideas on rectifying it? Thanks.

I would try using an automotive polish on it .
Any type will do the job .
Myself , down here in the Western Washington area , I use 3M polishes.Meguiars works well and so do others .
I'm sure you are experiencing a chemical reaction from the acid of your perspiration and the off gassing of the 'converstion varnish' finish.
It may also be from your strap , if you leave the strap attatched to the bass inside the case .
The dyes will be drawn into the clear coats.
I advise to remove straps whaen in the case .
The 'official' word was ...try a little 'TurleWax' on a piece of T shirt and then polish it ....that may just do the trick .
I have not used that particular product , but would imagine that it does in fact do the job.
