saw tom petty and the heartbreakers last weekend at the tweeter center in mansfield, ma. great - great - great show!!! black crowes opened up (great set - loud, bluesy, ballsy). but petty, campbell, and thurston (petty's multiinstrumentalist) all have a penchant for ricks.

petty played several - a fireglo with the f-hole (rose morris?), a mapleglo 360, a 425 (1 pup), and his signature 12 string 660. petty also played a very cool white teardrop guitar (vox perhaps), several teles, strats, a gib firebird, and several acoustics, including his signature model martin.

campbell played several also - a mapleglo 12 string (i believe) and a fireglo 330 or 360. he also had white sg with black pguard (one pup - maybe a p90), another sg, several lps and a gretsch (sp?), and an electric sitar (jerry jones?). the most interesting item to me, however, was a what appeared to be a rick mando. it looked exactly like a miniature 330 in apple green - curved sound holes, horns, headstock - the whole thing. but it was an 8-string and very small-scaled.

thurston usually played a strat but picked up a fireglo 330 at the end of the show.

anyway -- a night of great music and great great guitar playing.

What a showcase of and for Rickenbacker guitars Geoffrey. Thanks for this detailed review of who played what. What fun it would be to be with this group taking a tour of the Rickenbacker factory.

forgot to mention... campbell also played a great ol' tele - probably a vintage 50s model - it sure looked like a possibility from what i could see. butterscotchy finish with a black pguard. WORN fingerboard!! great funky twang. he also pulled out strat here and there.

the most interesting instrument he played i can only try to describe because i'm not sure what it was. some kind of electrified string instrument. i think it had 10 - but perhaps 12 - strings. it was roundish - but not perfectly round. it had a reddish body and a large circular pguard. can't remember the song he used it for (the sitar was used for 'don't come around here no more'). my buddy and i kept looking at each other, saying, "what the hell is that thing campbell's playing?"

if you're a gear freak, tp is a band to go see. john fogerty and steve stills are 2 others who really like to flash their goods (i'm just talking instruments here, folks).
