Laptop help needed.

Someone here at home, I'm thinking a little person of about 3 years old has been been up to funny business with my laptop. Now when I do a cold or warm startup it looks for a boot disk. How can I get it to go back to the preset factory boot up? It gives me the option of hitting any key to do an internal boot so it's no biggy. BTW, I'm running XP home version.

Cole, it sounds like you may need to go into the BIOS ("Setup") and change the default boot drive to C:. In your initial bootup (pre-Windows) screen there should be a softkey to push to go to Setup. This should bring up the main BIOS screen. I think at that point you will need to go to another screen where the boot sequence is specified.

If it doesn't, then there must be a problem with XP itself. Did you create a recent Restore point? If so, you could return to it - be sure to back up your other files (pictures, text, etc.) before doing the restore so you don't lose any important files. Another thing to try is Norton WinDoctor and DiskDoctor, if you have Norton Systemworks on the system.

If the user can't boot into Windows itself, and the error is not coming from an incorrect boot sequence in CMOS, a non-destructive repair would be the appropriate course of action. If registry corruption is suspected, a backup can generally be restored via the recovery console. Hard to really say anymore without knowing the specific errors or circumstances.

If I remember right it was error 8. I will let you know next time a go down. Gary, I haven't tried your idea yet, been a little busy.
