Hi,

I have a great little lap steel with an original silver case (red lining) and matching Rickenbacker M-8-E amplifier. The lap steel can be seen at http://home.earthlink.net/~mborkum/ and has the serial number on the jack plate of U278. Any help in dating (or any other info on) this instrument will be very much appreciated. Thanks!

It looks to be from the 100 series, probably late 50's.
I'll be away from my reference material until Tuesday. I'll get back to you with more exact info then.

That one has different knobs than the 1959 I used to have, and mine had its non-date-coded serial number stamped on the body (plain jackplate). I was able to date mine as 1959 from the date codes on the control pots.

It's a model 102 made from "57-"70. The knobs date it relatively early, but don't always tell the story.
Pot codes are the best. Nice steel.
