Why do Beatles tunes sound bad on my iPod?

I just got an iPod and i love it, however all my Beatles songs seem to have, what i can best describe as a light wistle in the background (especially in the '63-'64 work). If almost like the vocals and instruments have lisps. If i had to guess i would say its because they have not been mastered since '88. Can anyone comment on this?

Which encoding did you use to import them into iTunes prior to loading them onto your iPod?
mp3 (and what bitrate?), AAC, Apple lossless?

It's also because MP3s compress the hell out of your song leaving no breathing/headroom. All that time spent to properly produce a record? Out the window for the sake of convenience.
Sure, I have an Ipod but it's just for the gym & such - I don't expect it to sound good...

I had heard this was a problem with some of the first generation iPods when they played back mono tracks, but I have never come across it personally. Is yours a brand new iPod?

No one believes me but the smaller things get the worse they sound. That's why I still use SVT's and have a 70's Marantz receiver with 4 large Advent speakers.

If it only does this on mono recordings take it back and exchange it. They know this has been a problem in the past on some iPods.
