As a Rickophile bassist I would like to adjust the truss rods myself, but I don't want to do it improperly. My instruments are a mid 70's 4000, two 4001v63, and a 4001CS.
Thanks!

John: Welcome. This topic has arisen many times before. Please click on "Search" under Utilities in the menu to the left of this page. Type "truss" into the search window and make sure you select "Look in subject lines" . You will find 20 relevant pages. Should these be insufficient please ask a more specific question and I am sure Mark will be pleased to answer it.

I don't know how to adjust any instrument for rap , except to borrow a tip from Jimi Hendrix...................
Ronson Lighter fluid and a match seems to help.

First of all there are THREE era /types of truss rod adjustment proceedures.
The first is from the first FC Hall instrumnts up to the early 1980's
The next is the two piece guard 4001 (early 1980's )
Third is the John Hall era rods .
The first era is the problem era and only if you ASSUME they operate like any other brand of truss rod....They DO NOT!!!
The second era is really the same rods ,but with the adjustement nut under the pickup guard on the 4000 series basses. This is easily identified by the TWO piece guards on those basses.
The third era is the guitars that have the same style rods/Material as Fender, Gibson,Martin,Guild etc ....in other words-Indutry standard material.
These are identifiable by the THIN steel bar the rods go through, and by the visible nuts at the pickup end of the necks. These nuts are the 'anchor nuts' .
How to adjust the neck depends on era.
