Just looks to me like a nice 4001V63, minus the horseshoe. The guy doesn't know his Rick basses very well....

I was thinking the same thing guys. I'm looking at my V63 and I'm looking at this...?
I may go for it. Nothing wrong with having two. Eventhough I just picked up my first 4003!

I know these guys !!! They are half of the team of the Kolbek Brothers .
Val owns Guitarville in Seattle and Creighton owns Diversified Loans ..a Pawn Shop.
He is NOT a dealer and he does NOT know Ricks at all.

What about this "Late 70s 4001"
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=867337466
Late 70s??? I'd say Early 70s!!! Still has clear plexi fingergrip, full width inlay, and, wow, that
Fireglo I have not seen since I worked at Rick in '72!! Someone added one stray old Kluson to replace the one Grover gear. This looks nice otherwise!

Seems like there's just a lot of early 70's Rick basses out on ebay lately. What do you call that, a herd, a flock, a gaggle of Ricks? I haven't seen so much checkerboard and wide inlay Ricks out there in a long time! But what is up with that copperburst Rick that listed last night? Don, do you remember Rickenbacker ever making a bass with a finish like that? Looks like a refin to me...
You can see it here:

Gene;
this copperburst almost has to be a refin.
As to my memory of it, this was made Long after
I left Rick, and even then,I had Nothing to do
whatsoever with the finishing dept.Arnquist might know something, but I bet he calls it refin as well...

If this is a refinish ....there needs to be a couple of photos of the T rod cavity and the control cavity. That would clear up some of the wonder.
I do not think it is a stock piece ...
The guard is an old location pickup placement
The guard has knobs that run parallel
The nut is wrong , not Black bakelite/phenolic
The tuners ...they look like they are Gotohs
Show us the cavities.
When Brian Carman took me , my wife and my partner through the Rick factory in 1993 ,We saw all kinds of interesting colors ...
This ebony fretboard , is something that I also am not up on in the 1985 to 1995 era ...Anyone?

It looks like the "copperglo" bass had made a reappearance on eBay:

I don't know whether it's the same one as before. Maybe this time, someone can get the seller to take some pictures of the control and trussrod cavities.

The seller has cancelled the auction while he does some more research on the guitar. He did send me some pictures of the two cavities; here is the truss rod cavity:
It looks like the adjustment nuts have been painted over, which to me is a sure sign of a refin.
If I get any more info from the seller, I'll update this thread.
