Ok, so who wrote songs of the 1960s that made the charts under a name other than their own. I will offer the first easy pseudonym to get the ball rolling. Who was Bernard Webb and what song did this composer write and for whom?

McCartney. Woman for Peter and Gordon.

Wasn't Nanker Phelge the name the Stones used when they all contributed to a song???

As I understand it Peter, McCartney used the pen name to see if it made a difference in the success of the songs he wrote for Peter and Gordon. In other words would they still get the same airplay for a single with Webb as the composer as they would with McCartney?

Good ones Bob. Nice to see the British focus here. "L. Rainsford" was the pseudonym used by Allan Clarke. Tony Hicks and Graham Nash of the Hollies.

Yes I have read this as well Stan and it may be correct. Without being unkind, I am not sure if this is a level of modesty that McCartney might have had at the time though.
Perhaps it was also an attempt to keep his songwriting exclusively for the Beatles at the time. What argues against this idea, however, is the Lennon-McCartney compositions for Billy J. Kramer and Peter and Gordon.

This is a reversal of sorts, this guy never used his birth name on any of his compositions, Noah Kaminsky.

Jerry: I believe that Nanker Phelge was a pseudonym for Jagger and Richards. there was also a group of that name. Where is Howard when you need him?
