Okay so when did the necks get thicker. I typically like the smaller neck but Im always kind of open to anything. And whats the difference in the necks? I know theres that how truss rod things. How did that effect it?

Look for the "chunky neck" threads in Basses.
I think they got thicker after 1999.
That's why I own an '03 4003, because I live in humid Florida, and my pencil-necked Aria ProII bass changes it's curvature daily,(close enough) so I wanted something more sturdy, albeit at the expense of ultimate speed.
I've played some older ones, and I prefer the thicker feel(used to P-Basses).
I think the truss rods are simillar on all 4003's. The 4001's were different, with their adjustment procedure(loosen rods, manually adjust neck, tighten rods), whereas the 4003's are like many other basses' procedures for adjustment.

Now I'll wait for the experts to correct me!

I'd say go for a 4003, new or old!Image

I have one of those Rick neck adjustment pamphlets that shows how to bend the neck over your knee before tightening the rods!

I never had to do that though. And actually that's more-or-less the way you should adjust any rod that needs to be tightened. You should introduce the bend manually, and then tighten up the rod.

If they reinforce the necks with graphite they could keep them thin.
