Ken, this was common in the 50's and early 60's I believe for guitars. Bodies were made from more than the usual 3 or 4 pieces of wood. There are a couple of crazy examples out there apparently.
My green RM is a four piece, (if original..) which is the only example I've seen on a bass though.

Ive also have seen this a number of times on older Ric guitars and a handful of basses,maybe overtime it becomes more noticeable as the instrument gets older ,wood and clearcoat changing color.

Combo 850s were among many Rickenbackers that were made of this 'butcher block' style construction back then; many of the Capri semi-hollow prototypes and early production models have multi-piece tops as well.
