Magnets do change as they age .
THAT is THE part that no one has been able to nail .

Non of the pickup guys have figured this out to a tee.

Right, the magnetic fields can change, but as far as the metal "breaking down" it can happen only under heat extremes (you'd know it because your guitar would be on fire) or through oxidation, (and you'd notice the rust) but other than that... nah. The metal won't spontaneously change grain structure, and nickel and cobalt don't evaporate, no matter how hard you play.
