JG to MG

Would I be completely stupid if I turned my JG into an MG? It is an 87 4003. I REALLy like the looks of the MG and my JG finish needs help, I suppose I could sell and rebuy an MG from that era but my 4003 is not a "collector's" item anyway.

DON'T DO IT.

It's cheaper by far to sell the JG, and buy the MG. No matter what condition the JG is in...

Actually, let me rephrase that,I wouldn't mind doing Jeff's tung oil on it as a refinish. I have no idea what the wood looks like underneath tho.

There's a reason that it's jetglo and it's probably due to the woodgrain that's underneath.

I had a suspicion they might use the "lesser" looking wood for the jetglos.

Maybe you could scrape it just a bit, so you can see the wood it's made of...

I've stripped two white RICs and unlike other manfacturers, I thought the maple underneath was quite nice. One even had nice "birdseye" wings. The grain patterns didn't line up perfectly but I still thought it was a nice as some of the mapleglos and not as nice as some of the others. I really don't like white and BT and since I needed to fix a few cracks and really see what the cracks really entailed I stripped the bass. I fixed the cracks and shot it with a couple of coats of sanding sealer. I must admit it looked pretty nice. From my experience, which is limited to two RIC instruments and a boat of Fender and Gibsons, I haven't found the same **** under a solid RIC that you would under the other two. As for a tung oil finish it would be easy - strip and oil. If you had somebody refin for you in nitro, poly or CV it be around 400-500 bucks. I just had my Azureglo redone by Michael Dolan and it was somewhere in that range including shipping. Or course if I had a JG and was gonna refin, I'd go with another cool RIC color, like AG, Silver, Ruby.

I wouldn't change the color of a bass unless it was already refinished.

I'm in Lars camp, but hey, do what you like. Image The natural finish is beatiful if it's done well. If it's not, well...ends up looking like my 65 Mustang!

I don't have any pics of that thing, but when I bought it someone had long ago taken off the red finish that originally was on it. How do I know it was a red? There's at least three spots the idiot didn't get it all, as if he/she/it dodn't think to take the guitar apart before raping it...

Either way, the 'Stang is a great guitar, unlike many Mustangs. And the fact that the finish sucks made it very easy to gig with-not much was going to hurt that finish.

Oops, my bad, I was thinking about a 64 and a half candy apple red REAL mustang! You know, the Ford one!

If we were talking about Mustangs, I would agree with Ed

This bass was originally J/G or B/G. Stripped before I got it and yes, I do wish it was original, but it doesn't look too bad imo..

This '73 started out as jetglo, then it was pained red, then it was painted white, then it was stripped, then it was finished mapleglo, then it was wired like a jazz bass, then I restored it stock, then I used it for 2 years, then Cooper used it for 2 years ...

That is some really nice wood grain for a bass that was originally jetglo. The back is gorgeous.
