How have you been able to install a pickup cover, on your treble bass high gain pickup so that it is secure? I am referring to the type of cover that is on the bass high gain pickup.

there are 4 different ways to install it ...

1 - put it on top ... this looks ugly ... and it is too high ...

2 - put it up under the chrome surround and put the spring under it ... this is the way it comes from the factory ...

3 - put it under the surround and put the spring between the cover and the surround ... this way it will go up and down with the pickup ...

4 - throw it in the case and forget about it ... this is the method most of us use ...

Thanks Jeff. I have my plastic cover in the case where it has been since I got my 4003. I apologize for not explaining my need better.

Owen: Yes I mean the chrome/black mounting ring as on the neck pickups.

I use option 3 with great results. A Ric without it's cover is incomplete ...

A Ric without its cover is.......easier to play, and I love the sound of playing directly over the pickup.

Is this going the way of flats vs. rounds?

Only for you lot that insist the one inch area covered by the pickup is the absolutely the only area that the strings can be contacted.

I grew up with the covers on, I've never had an issue with the covers on. On my 72 there is, at present no cover. I don't like it, and will be changing it soon.

I can't tell any real (if any at all) difference in playing just in front of where the cover would be, and over the pickup itself.

I'd not say it's any easier or not, just different.

I've always played over the bridge pickup on every bass I owned. I guess that's why I play over the P/U on my new-to-me Ric!

I will say I go close to the neck for soft mellow whole notes in a ballad sometimes.

While all of the comments here are of interest with regard to the conventional treble pickup cover, I am interested in knowing how folks have attached the chrome surround to the treble pickup. That is, the same type surround as found on the bass high gain pickup.
