I have a Fostex MR-8. It sells for $299, is very easy to use, has very good CD like sound quality. It records onto a compact flash card. You can download the recorded music from the card to your computer if desired.

Toneworks makes the Pandora that's a lot like the Fostex but I think a bit smaller.

The Fostex MR-8 will record 2 tracks simultaneously.

Charley, that Pandora you are thinking of can fit in a good sized shirt pocket.

I have a Tascam 234 Syncaset rackmount 4 track, very nice as it runs at 3 3/4ips and has dbx noise reduction built into it. I run my instruments into a Furman PQ-3 and then into a switchbox I made (1 rack space unit) that selects one of the 4 tracks to record to. Great setup for coming up with song ideas and adding extra guitars and basses to the song. I keep the recorder and the switchbox in a 4 space SKB case.

Back in the '80s I had a Tascam 3440 10 1/2" open reel recorder that I used pretty much like I do the 234 these days. I may try and get one of those again.
