Two things to consider:

One, the story of this bass, especially the fact that this may be the most genuine CS signature model in service, makes up for the fact that it was stripped. Truthfully, the bass still looks great in natural; and, in my thinking, SealerGlo would construe a further improvement, circumstances being what they are. I'm OK with it.

Two, the "Nicotine-Stained-IvoryGlo" was never an OEM RIC finish, so who's the greater sinner now?

Peter, please correct my facts on this if I'm wrong, but I recall Chris's Rose Morris 1999 having shipped in Fireglo.

Rickenbacker made some 4001S basses in a very similar color to Squire's in the late '70's. I think John Hall said they were made for the European market; there is a thread here on the Forum somewhere that speaks of this...

I don't think anyone has ever proven that Squire's bass was originally fireglo, although everything I've ever heard about the Rose Morris Ricks indicates that most of them were fireglo. I've seen very early pictures of Chris's Rick( pre-Yes) and it was Mapleglo, and thru the end of the Fragile tour it WAS Mapleglo. Now, whether it was originally that way or it was stripped from Fireglo is a question I can't answer. I think it is quite possible that it was originally Mapleglo, given the fact that it was already a common finish at the time it was manufactured. If anyone has a definite answer for this, I'm all ears!
By the way, when the Ltd Edition was still available, I asked the company if they would make one in Mapleglo for me(i.e. like it was in YES's early years) but they refused.

I think Squire worked for Boosey and Hawkes and bought it thru the store in 1965....

This is accurate John, however, while the basses of Entwhistle, Quaife and Leitch were Fireglo, was this also the case for Squire? The question has been asked, let's see if Chris and associates reply. The likely bet is that it was Fireglo but we need to know for sure. Right?

Peter: Yep, ultimately the one to settle the query would be Chris Squire himself. It would be really neat to find that it was something other Fireglo--it would possibly be unique in terms of a Rose-Morris example.

I guess the bass that Maurice Gibb used with The Bee Gees would also be a fairly early example (DH) which was August 1964 mfg.; Does anyone know the sn# of Squire's original bass??

Let's settle the "Fireglo vs Mapleglo" deal with Squires original 4001s right now.I met him in March, '74 in Mpls., on the Tales From Topographic Oceans tour. I had already heard about this story in some magazine somewhere, and among other things Chris and I chatted about, I asked him about it and he told me that ,yes, it Was originally Fireglo.Now some of you can sleep tonight........

Sorry to beat a "dead horse", but FYI, the stripped 4001CS on e-bay sold for $960.
Another one listed as "owned by collector, never played" sold for $2901!
