i just did the cap mod to my 80 4001. omg it sounds SOOOOO much better! i couldnt believe it! i was expecting a little bit more bottom but WOW was i surprised! i should have done a recording of before and after but it was kind of a spur of the moment/I'm bored thing so i didnt think too much about recording.

As evident in some of the other threads on the cap mod topic, there are strong opinions regarding this in both camps.
Personally, I wish I had yanked the cap out of mine years ago...the tonal difference is so amazing that it's like having a new bass!

I think that my 1974 4001 is happier as well, because she gets played more now...

With next Thursday being the projected arrival day of my '77, by Friday there'll be a .0047 circling Earth...

typically on a 70's 4001 bass I will remove the cap ... but on a 60's bass with a horseshoe pickup it sounds better with the cap ... the 70's 8k ohm high gain pickups sound good with or without the cap ... but without the cap there is more volume and more bass and more low mids and more growl ... and there is still plenty of treble ... but some purists like the cap sound ...

...But that's one reason why our Pods have EQ. Want less bass? Dial it out... but I love the idea of having it there if I need it.

Purists hate me... you should hear some of the flak I've taken for my modified 240Z!
