New Song For The Searchers

The Searchers have recently introduced the Brooks and Dunn song "Every River" into their stage show. The song is particularly suited to The Searchers style and, in particular, the rich sounds of John McNally's Rickenbacker 12-string are heard to great effect.
What other contemporary songs should The Searchers consider for their stage show?

New songs for the Searchers'stage show?Well that means some of the old favourites might have to move over,a difficult decision, perhaps we should get Roy started !My own feeling is that the Sire Sessions might be revisited. Not new but these were prestigious recordings for the group and other than Hearts In Her Eyes,a tremendous crowd favourite ,no other songs from these CD's are heard in concert as far as I know. The songs from the Sire Sessions in my opinion bridge the gap nicely between the "Classic Searchers" sound and the present. So my choices would include Silver,Changing and It's Too late. The Tremeloes Here Comes My Baby (Cat Stevens composed) is a song that might go over with the Searchers because of its live sounding party atmosphere.Over here country band the Mavericks brought that one out of the closet. The Searchers have such a great song history of their own to refresh their live concerts that for me "new" isn't necessarily the answer,or maybe I just prefer the old.

In case you have not read it can I give a unashed plug for my article Searchers Fantasy Album See Clough Links further down the page, for the type of Songs I believe the band could perhaps do as a album to be sold at gigs, similiar to the one The Fortunes did. I know there are commercial considerations, but did hard's like myself would love a copy of something like this.

Just a great topic Tim. There are so many possibilities. I have thought that Spencer's voice would be well suited for "Angel" by Lionel Ritchie. I also consider that the Searcher's could have the chorus in three part harmony, something that Ritchie has failed to do as often as when he was with the Commodores. Also, there is lots of room for showy drumming on this one which Eddie would enjoy I am sure. The lyrics follow.
Angel
I just want to tell you all the things you are
And all the things you mean to me
When I find myself believing there's no place to go
When I feel the loneliness inside my heart
Chorus:
You're the answer to my prayer
And you're with me everywhere
You're my angel, miracle
You're all I need tonight
Give me shelter from the rain
You breathe life into me again
You're my angel, miracle
You're all I need to know tonight
Life is just a moment, where blowing in the wind
We're tryin' to find a friend
And only time can tell us if we win or if we lose
And who will stand beside us
When there's darkness all around me you're the light I see
When I need someone to ease my troubled mind
Chorus
You're the answer to my prayer
And you're with me everywhere
You're my angel, miracle
You're all I need tonight
Give me shelter from the rain
You breathe life in me again
You're my angel, miracle
You're all I need to know , oh ,tonight
Oh
You're my angel
Uh- huh
All I need tonight
You're my angel
You're the anwswer to my prayer
And you're with me everywhere
You're my angel, miracle
You're all I need tonight
Give me shelter from the rain
You breath life into me again
You're my angel, miracle
You're all I need to know tonight
You're all I need tonight
All I need tonight (angel, my angel, my angel)
You're all I need to know, oh (angel, my angel, my angel)
You're my angel (angel, my angel, my angel)
My-my-my-my-my angel (angel, my angel, my angel)
My angel (angel, my angel, my angel)

If I was going to choose a Lionel Ritchie Song it would be Tender Heart from same album, good guitar sound

How about "That Thing You Do?" It would be a great vocal challenge for Spencer and there would be great harmony lines for Frank and John. It is also a high energy song that would be well received by the audience in my view.

How about a Wonders' medley from the vast PlayTone catalog?
That Thing You Do
Little Wild One
Dance With Me Tonight (in the style of 'Ain't That Just Like Me')
and I need You (That Thing You Do)
Hmmm...what were Hanks and Goetzman thinking about...

The Derailers have written and recorded a couple of songs that would be right for The Searchers. "Just To Spend The Night With You" is one that I think sounds like The Searchers did it to begin with.
The title track off their forthcoming CD "Geniune" is described as having The Derailers' Bakersfield/Liverpool sound with "stinging British Invasion guitars, a backbeat, hand-claps..."

Every River was originally written and recorded by Kim Richey, who I think is Canadian (can't be sure about that), but it was certainly Brooks and Dunn who gave it the arrangement that The Searchers use.

"Every River" was indeed written and first recorded by Kim Richey, who was born and raised in Ohio. She lived in Nashville for several years, and has recently moved to Austin. Kim's version (from her second CD, "Bittersweet,") seemingly has no Ric's involved; it was the Brooks and Dunn version that Rick-i-fied the song.
Many of Kim's fans feel her best work was found on her first 2 CD's (the eponymous one and "Bittersweet;") that her 3rd, "Glimmer" was a bit over-produced and saccarine, and the 4th, "Rise," was almost unlistenable.
Notable for our puposes is that Kim was for several years an endorser of Gretsch acoustic guitars. She has since moved on to Gibsons. (She told me she, "never did get a sound she liked out of the Gretsches.") A few years back, Gibson named her, "Best Female Guitarist."
"Every River" -- Great song; great songwriter.

I got my copy of The Derailers' "Genuine" tonight. In my opinion, there's a very strong influence of The Searchers on the title track. Visit their website, listen to the teaser and see if you don't agree.

I don't think that album is available in the U.K. All I have found is "Full Western Dress" and "Here Come The Derailers" (which I bought). On the basis of the CD I bought, I would say their sound is closer to The Mavericks rather than The Searchers.
