Chris Squire's RM1999---a question

At what point did Chris Squire install a string tree on the headstock of his RM 1999...? I'm guessing that this has to do with the headstock being broken off some years ago? Tawk amongst yourselves..

If I remember correctly it was during the 90125 period, I remember seeing one, then two trees, and now they're gone.
Speaking of, how come no one commented on my "Fish sandwich?" thread? I thought it was a funny photo. Oh well.

Ron: I was trying to come up with something clever to say about the pic, but I failed miserably. I met Chris in Erie PA in 1972 when Yes played a college there. They had rented our keyboardist's B# and I was onstage helping him deliver it when Chris walked by ... I swear his belt buckle was even with my nose (I'm 5'9"). We didn't talk much because they were doing a sound check, but he could have blown me off completely. I has just ordered a 4001 and he told me to put Rotos on it. "Don't even muck about with flats!" he said. About a year later Yes played Pittsburgh, and in the middle of the set I looked up onstage and the drummer from my band was sitting next to Alan White. I think that proves they were approachable even when they were becoming major stars.

They were quite approachable back then. I met Chris in Nov. '74 and he invited me and my two friends I was with into his hotel room and we chatted about lots of stuff for over an hour. I have had breakfast with them in '75 and jammed with Jon Anderson in '76.

There was a more relaxed atmosphere back in those days. I've met up with Genesis a few times, once Phil Collins spent time talking to us about their future recording plans for "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", and he got me a stage pass for the "Trick Of The Tail" concert when they were in town.

The one time I saw Loggins & Messina we ended up jamming with the band playing in the lounge of their motel!

Very fun times in the '70s for sure. Image

We opened for Big Brother & the Holding Co. Saurday and backstage their bassist asked me how I liked my Hofner. I told him I didn't care for it and was always happy when the 2nd set comes and I play a Ric, he just laughed(We only played the 1st set that night). He had one of those Kubicki X Factor basses, a weird choice I thought.

I like Chris Squire's attitude ...

I recall that in 1969, I bought a used Hofner (for 85$) and used it a bit with a band doing mostly R&B from Stax/Volt, Motown, etc. Played it for three sets one night, then played my P bass for the final set (yep, 4 sets in them says). "Now THAT'S a bass!" was the guitar player's comment. The Hofner was stolen from my care not long after. Wonder if the guitarist did it? Image

I had a hofner for a while ... it was cool in its own way ... it was light and easy to play ... but I am not a fan of the bridge design ... and those little basses are fragile ...

but I prefer solid body basses ...
