I played a Chris Squire finally and man - o - man, what a nice bass. It's a friend of mines and he claims he could get $2500.00 for the bass. (It is mint) Is this true? I saw one online at coolbasses that looks nice, but there isn't a posted price. Before I take the cookie jar out, is this realistic?

That seems to be the high end of the scale for the 4001CS. They have been ranging from a low figure of $900 to $2500 on ebay. Id would be careful however as some of the early basses seemed to have paint issues or neck angle problems. IMHO for a 4001CS to pull $2500 it had better be mint with the certificate, vintage case and paperwork.

They're great- I bought one a year ago for $1200. Pretty much mint, but I've gigged with it every weekend, so it's not anymore! I agree, $2500.00 is definitely the high end of the scale, although it's creeping up continuously; $1800-2000 seems the going rate for mint pieces.

Just fine, Banta! I check in from time to time at HCBF, but whenever anybody is asking for Rick advice you've beat me to the punch!

Thanks, I guess it's pretty unrealistic to think I'll find one for 1200 now! I'll keep my eyes on this one that I saw Iguess. They also have something called a "Tuxedo"??? Never heard of it, looks cool though.

I paid $1000 for my (brand new)lefty 4001CS(w/silver case) in '93. Bought it from Southpaw Guitars in Houston,Texas. Anyone know how many lefties were made?

There is a 4003SPC "TUX" being offered on gbase.com, but the seller is taking "serious offers" only, whatever that means. I'd keep my eye on Mike Parks page, he had a TUX a few months ago for $1200, that took forever to sell (just about when I had decided to buy it) but he's your best bet.

$2901 that 4001CS went for! Yikes! Now I'm wondering if I should put mine away. It already has a slight discoloration where my forearm rests on the body. Rick should reissue it, like they have with Tom Petty's non-signature 660 and end this nonsense.

Very cool... $2901... I'm glad I've never played mine out now and it's absolute mint condition. I bought it new and have all the paperwork etc. On the other hand I have no plans to sell it.

As far as I've seen that's the highest I've seen one go for, oddly enough it wasn't as clean as one that sold for 2500 about a month ago. Strange market on these basses me thinks.

I was offered 3 grand for mine from a collector in NYC. Mine is still in the Rickenbacker factory box that is used for shipping, and it includes all of the goodies. It's virtually untouched.
Had i known that they were going to be this popular, I would have bought 5 units.
