I just look at the serial # which dates it to February 1983.The tuning machines are Grovers.I thought the neck pickup wasn't working until realized I hadn't plugged in to the mono jack.Anyway this is such aa cool guitar and it sounds a whole lot different from my 330.

Those dark fireglos are gorgous Mitch...it's a real stunner! I have several of the '90's dark FG's & search them out now....gorgous, gorgous gtrs.....they really do make you go funny inside.....Image

I love those aged FGs. My ES-16 is the same sort of tone and is of the same vintage--mid-'83. I wouldn't change it for the world.

Hi Paul,I saw some pictures of your ES-16 in another post its a real beauty and it looks mint.I didn't know they still made them in the 80's.One thing I noticed is that the Grovers on your guitar are different that the Grovers on mine.Yours look like Grovers but mine look like Klusons(but they work better):

Yeah, Mitch, I'm not too crazy about those modern-looking Grovers like the ones on my ES-16, but the guitar is so sweet, they will stay.

The only mod made to my '81 320, on the other hand, was that the previous owner replaced the Kluson Deluxes (or maybe they were square case Grovers like yours) with the newer Grovers, filling the old screw holes nicely, but reaming out the peghead to 10mm.

So, back went the K Deluxes, along with a set of hex adapter bushings. Looks real sweet. Pictures of finished 320 soon.

But, again, ain't those vintage FGs gorgeous!

Mitch, great guitar. I love the early 80s FG, small head stock, early high gains, and the Grovers top it off as a special guitar.

Thanks! The Grovers surprized me be caus they work so well.By the way, this guitar sounds much different from my 2004 330.It has a warmer, thicker and more well rounded sound.I know part of the difference is solid body but are the 83 Hi-Gains different than the new ones?

It's very interesting that you say that your solid body 620 sounds "warmer and thicker" than your 330. Theoretically, it should be the other way around!

I too was fascinated by the sound of my early '80's high-gains. Very full and rich and powerful.

Ageing is a factor in a guitar developing a tone of its own, and I think these vintage instruments are a perfect example.

I'm wondering about the experiences of others in this vein...

Tony? You have multiple Ricks and a lot of experience with high gains and 330s...

I took a picture of the Headstock here because I noticed that the TRC says "Model 620" When did Rickenbacker stop making model specific TRCs?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/fuzztone65/Rick620016.jpg

Maybe you can also tell from that photo how narrow the fretboard is at the nut.The Neck seems to have a thinner profile than my 330 also.On the Rickenbacker page the neck measurements of the 330 and the 620 are the same.Is the neck of a new 620 the same as the neck on mine?Just curious.
