Someone recently told me that Rickenbacker will probably never make the 4005 again because they threw out all the jigs and templates for the model. I refuse to believe that Rickenbacker would ever be that stupid.

Rickenbacker needs to make money to stay in business ... the 4005, 4003s8, 4080, 4002, and other collectable basses didn't sell very well when they were available ...

For more information (and the direct opinion of Mr J. Hall about this) go see the rickenbacker forum (
www.rickenbacker.com)... There's plenty of it!

When the last 4005 was made, the collectable guitar market didn't exsist in the frenzied state it does today. If Rickenbacker, Inc. thought they had a dud on their hands, it would make sense not to take up valuable real estate by saving the thingys neccessary to make it. I've only noticed a pronounced interest in 4005's in the last year or two, and that may be limited to these forums and a few dealers.

I dunno, basses have always been a sleeper on the vintage market. I really think we are our own worst enemy when it comes to Rick bass pricing.
Depending on which side of the fence you are on.

Reminds me of Eddie Cochran...
"hey, look a-there, across the street
there's a 4005 made just for me
to own that bass would be a luxery
but my dollar can't afford the strings
a brand new Rickenbacker is outa my class
but that can't stop me from athinkin' to myself
that 4005's fine lookin' man, it's something else"
...or something like that...

We DID throw out all the jigs and fixtures! The world has changed and none of these would be of the slightest use with the machinery and modern production methods we use today.
I still don't think that the market is big enough for this model at the price it would cost to justify making these. But let's see if that still holds true in 5 or 10 years.

There!
The final word....For the next decade at least...
No more talking of a reissue now...
Time to buy all those old vintage basses before they cost more than your car!

Agreed Ken. I went through the car thing phase in my teens and 20's. Then I bought an old Nissan that I never had to worry about getting scratched, etc and haven't been back since.
I have two cars and eight basses, and every bass is worth more than my cars.

5-10 years... hey that sounds like just enough time for me to save up the money its gonna cost me....
I had a savings for a car.... but some how i talked my parents into giving me one of theres... so im spending the savings on basses. Probly not a smart idea... but its hard to resist.
