Looking for an old chrome pickup cover

Hey,

I'm getting my 72' 4001 soon, but it no longer has the chrome pickup cover for the bridge pickup. Anyone here have an old beat up one they would be willing to sell? As the bass is not mint I don't really want a brand new (and plastic) cover.

So far as I'm aware they're all plastic (except the horseshoes) but I second the request (although obviously John has first dibs) cause I'd like one for my 72 as well.

I know i'm a little late to the party here, but i have a brdg. p/u cover from my 1975 4001 that i would part with.. i took it off the day i bought my bass, and never looked back. I don't recall if there's any appreciable difference from year to year with this part.. it's in pretty good shape, though. I'll dig it out tomorrow if anyone's interested.. i don't know what they're worth, so i'm open to offers. I've got some other parts i'll post on the 'for sale' page asap.

72' covers were/are plastic.

There were a few chrome covers , but John Hall has said there were some problems with them....something to to with the shielding or something....so they started making the plastic ones.

The trick that works for aging Fender type metal covers is throwing them in the tumble dryer. I don't know how this will affect a plastic handrest so be cautious.

Just slightly off topic, but does anyone have a pickup surround for my 72' 4001 with the cut away/ lowered center section. When I give the bass a good work out my strings are hitting the standard surround. Thanks, Bob

I was under the impression that RIC is considering switching to metal handrests on 4003's.

Yes, the old ones are getting harder to find, I waited months and finally shelled out a few weeks ago. And yes, they're (almost) all plastic, at least the ones I've seen. The difference between "new" and "old" ones is that the newer ones are oddly thick in profile, and also a good deal deeper than the older ones, giving kind of a funny look and feel. I had two of the newer ones, but I sold them and haven't looked back.
