Setting up a Ric

hi,
there are a lot of different opinions as to neck adjustments as there are a lot of different basses.

i really need the most simple explaination on how to do this for 2 reasons.
1-there is no one i trust touching my bass, have you ever seen the people in music stores, most of them are one step away from being macdonalds drive thru cashiers..lol

2-just to know my bass completely, a sense of pride i guess doing something yourself

how much should the bow be to the eye? what is the best way to hold a Ric to look down the neck?

i forgot a few things. my selector switch doesnt stay in the up position very long, i slips back to the middle when i play it.

when i called ric when i first got it the rep said it wasnt worth the cost to send it back to them for thatminor problem,even though it was brand new.i dont really concern my self so much with that as i use both pick ups anyway. i didnt like the "customer" service.

i also asked them what the 2 thumb screws on the bridge adjusted and they said nothing. it is deoration.

well another ric owner told me that was for a mute feature.mine doesnt work. in fact there was rust on the threads of the thumb screws.

if i take the bridge off is it only the 2 philips screws at the bottom of the bridge that holds it in place?

There are also 3 more screws under the removable saddle area of the bridge. When I had my ('01) 4003, My mute system didn't reach my strings, either. Therefore, I agree, the thumb screws are just for show.

Interesting. My '00 4001CS's mute works just fine though I did have to repeatedly work at raising and lowering it before it actually worked and those nurled screw heads are tough on the fingers and thumbs.

The mute on my '00 4003 works too. I tried playing them with the mute up high, but it was too plodding, so I lowered them. But they do work.
