That's been discussed. JH thinks it was a commercially-available kit, not one of theirs. Look for the thread, First Fretted Electric Bass, I believe!

One of the things that John discussed with us on the factory tour was that in the early days of the company they were actually in the business of making electrical pickups for a range of traditional stringed instruments.

We saw a very eclectic Double Bass with a Horseshoe pickup that had to have weighed 2-3lbs, and a couple of very interesting electric Violins with mini Horseshoes. Rickenbacker also made a Electric Harp for "Harpo" ...

There was also an 30's acoustic on Ebay last week that had a Ric pickup retro fitted.
