As Rare as hen's teeth? ... I don't think so ... this guy bought a 70s 4001 Azureglo Ric off of somebody I know and returned it and froze the guy's paypal account ... then I took that same bass and put a neck toaster in and repaired the wiring and it became the best sounding 4001 I ever played ... so the guy had a real rare bass that was a real player and didn't recognise it but he seems to think a generic 4003s in jetglo is somehow as rare as hen's teeth ... weren't there a few thousand 4001s and 4003s basses made?

Who ever started that saying anyways? "Rare as hen's teeth?" I've only ever heard it when referring to Rickenbackers.

It's a very old saying....but apparently it's only being kept alive in the realm of Rick's...which, of course, is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick...

Scarce as Hen's Teeth

This idiom means to be very rare or not existing at all. This idiom comes from the 19th century. This expression is sometimes used as "scarcer than hen's teeth". Hen's teeth don't exist because hens don't have teeth. They grind their food up in their stomach.

A way to use this expression would be if you were trying to find a dinosaur, you could say that would be as scarce as hen's teeth. Another way to use it is if you went looking for a popular toy or game but couldn't find it anywhere because everyone had bought them, you could say the game is as scarce as hen's teeth.

Or, in the case of Jeff R. and the magnificent collection of basses he already owns, you might say: "That 4003s is as useless as teats on a boar hog..."

the first time I heard the expression "as rare as hen's teeth" it was John Hall responding to someone looking for replacement pickups for a 4002 bass ...

and I like a good 4003s ... especially if it has a low B ...

Despite the fact that I think the "S" option makes the basses even more gorgeous, I'm quite sure it's not *that* rare.

I would buy it if a) I had the money, and b) it wasn't jetglo.
