How High Gain is High Gain?

I have had high gain pickups ranging from approximately 5KOhms to 13 KOhms and in between.

I found the 5K high gain to be too thin for my liking, but have grown to love the 12 to 13K high gain pickup. At 13K there is a nice full sound with great clarity. At the neck of a 24 fret model I find the high gains at around 12K to be warm with a rich tonality. A 12K toaster at the same location does not have the same fullness and lacks the jangle factor that I was looking for in my Model 350.

I would be interested in your comments with respect to high gain pickups in both 24 fret and 21 fret models.

I've got a stock '02 330, about how many Ohms would my hi-gains be putting out?

Um, strictly speaking, John, and with all due respect, an ohm is a unit of resistance, and so what it does is sort of the opposite of "put out". It resists.

Thank you, Paul. Never did do very well in Physics. Or is it Chemistry? Maybe Earth Science?

John: Rather than giving ball a park figure of 11K, why not get an Ohm Meter and check out your pickups. Collecting a range of measurements here would be interesting. It is understood that there would be measurement error but it would still be of interest to see fluctuations over time.

I'm keen, Peter! Where exactly would you put the two probes to measure it? Multimeter at the ready........

I'd love to participate and find out the ohms on my 79 370!

I'm in the same boat as Howard but I don't have a multimeter in my hand...

Peter if you decide to swap out your 12K toaster please keep me in mind. I will be interested in buying it.

I do have a loose high gain at home that someone did a shoddy job on trying to cut off the button heads. (I can't complain for free) This one has the toaster bobbin. I can measure it if you want, but I've never tried it so I can't comment on its sound.

I really like my Highgains for rock leads. I even have and extra set. But for a twelve its gotta be toasters.
