Serial number in the cavity?

I was cleaning my 4003 this weekend, when I popped the bridge pickup out of it's route and saw inside the numbers "00 05920" which is my serial number. I thought the numbers were assigned in a random fashion after the guitar was assembled?

Yeah, plus it's a good place to routinely place your personal ID - i.e. SS#, etc. Great in case your precious instrument is ever stolen.

Take a tip from the cops...the best way to add your SS# or other ID is to get some metal stamps and (gently) stamp the wood with your mark. Even sanding won't remove them, as the wood fibers crush and the numbers remain legible a ways down into the wood. The same principle is used to ID guns that have had their numbers filed off.
The other thing they recommend is to place one ID in a hidden spot and another in a very visible place. But I'd be verrry reluctant to do that to my Ric.
