Bass Amp Search

I've been looking for a new rig to replace my Workingman's 15. I've gotten a lot of great tips here in the past few weeks...thanks guys!

In my search, I came upon a new but obviously long-unsold Sunn 1200S head. It sounded great, and could be a good start for my new rig. It certainly has the power. I'll need to try it with my 4003, as my primary goal is the "fragile" sound.

I decided to do some research on this amp. I had heard that after only 4 years, Fender was dropping the Sunn line. Then I saw that Fender had just announced the release of two new amps...the Bassman 300 and 1200. When I searched their website and bassstreet.com site, they made no mention whatsoever of Sunn. The amps are quite obviously the former 300 and 1200S. Fender's history page makes no mention of the switch and that they've discontinued the Sunn name. Very odd.

Anyway, has anyone got experience with the 1200S with a 4000 series bass? They're asking $1,250. That's the original MSRP (the Bassman rename is $1,599!) for the Sunn so I'll bet I can talk them down to a thou or so. Also, any cabinet ideas with this? I realize I'll have to be very careful...1,200 watts and all.

Craig, there's nothing like the SVT. If what you want is a tone monster, then that's the amp to buy. I sold my SVT's due to the fact that I was not playing out anymore, and the fact that they weigh a ton. I bought a Carvin combo 2-10 that packs 600 watts and I kept one of my original ampeg bottoms for the big sound. The Carvin has tube saturation, and it works for me. As far as the Squire sound, pay attention to the sound that he got on "Close to the edge". I prefer it over the sound on "Fragile" (Which is being released in DVD audio multi-channel soon). "Close to the edge" has the rick bite, plus great low end.
Sunn amps are nice, but I gotta side with the SVTs. I sold one of my amps to a guy in Denmark for $900.00. It included a road case.

I have played my Rics through Sunn, Peavy, SWR, and Ampeg ... I like the Ampeg b2r for power ... I use several different speaker cabs ... a 2x10 and 1x18 works nice also I use 2 1x15 cabs ... I also use a line 6 pod for tone shaping ... Also the b2r has a xlr out that you can send into the PA .... This setup is real nice for Rics and other basses ... Jeff
