This thread is obviously to all Forum members regarding the thread about Greg Feo, who lost a huge collection of vintage instruments that he had collected for most of his life and apparently who had no specific insurance cover for his collection.

Hopefully, everyone who has valuable instruments and having read that thread, will have made sure that they have some form of insurance, and that insurance is ABSOLUTELY BINDING in the case of a loss.

I urge everyone here to check their respective policy or policies. Make sure everything is updated with agreed values and that you know where you are covered with your instruments at all times.

Unfortunately, as is often the case, this is something we should all learn from.

This is something which I've looked into a bit. I need to re-contact my home insurer for the details. If your instruments are just for 'hobby', your home insurance should cover them. A video/DVD tour of your collection complete with values and dates is a nice asset (delivered to your insurance agency!).

If your instruments are the tools of your trade and a source of income, a different sort of insurance is needed.

This may vary from state-to-state.

A house on my street burned two years ago. I was stunned at just how quickly it was consumed. Old homes tend to go up like gas-soaked paper.

I have coverage with Heritage Insurance Services (www.musicins.com), who specialize in musical instrument coverage for hobbyists and pros.

Another good one is Clarion (www.clarionins.com).

Until now, I've been without dedicated gear coverage and I've been very lucky. But since I started collecting more expensive and some vintage instruments, I found that the 'peace of mind' factor makes the monetary sacrifice well worth it. In my case, the annual premium is only about what I'd pay for one low-priced imported guitar.

An unfortunate reality. I am properly covered. I have a growing collection of instruments and an art collection as well. Just seems unreal that your life can change so quickly.
