Is it just me or do a number of things about this bass look strange?

The headstock looks strange. I think this one originally had the Grover tuners, which means the post holes are in a slightly different location. Also, the replacement tuners have a much larger post diameter. In order to get the TRC to clear the larger posts on the tuners, it looks like the TRC was trimmed.

Shame, as that's a very nice bass when it comes down to the grain...

This is what the tuners are supposed to look like on a early 80s 4003.

The SD replacement pickups for Rick bass sound lousy to me. Maybe it's the replace pickups and tuners and poor quality photos, but that bass looks odd to me also...even with the nice figure in the wood.

I think it's the combo of the tuners, which make it look like a copy and the SD replacements.
Too many things looking wrong....
But, the split guard makes it around an early 4003 bass around 80/81.

I think Duncan makes great guitar pickups, but except for the first active Basslines PJ pickups (with the DIP switches) I don't care for his bass pickups at all.
This would be a nice looking bass fixed up a bit.

They're better than non-functioning pickups, but I was underwhelmed with mine compared to the guitar pups I've bought. They're not horrible, though.
