So the Baesen brothers, Al and Gabe, and myself went to see the Stones last night in Charlottesville. Gordon was supposed to go but he pussed out. I'm not surprised. Anyway, we head out of here around 12:30pm, stop and get some quick eats on the way and head on. We get into C-Ville around 4 and the town is already packed with people trying to park. We ended up paying $20 to park in some dude's yard. People in the town charge for parking during games and concert events. Easy cash for them. Good idea. So we park and walk about 10 minutes to the stadium to check thiings out. It's still pretty early so we walk around some more until Jeanne and her mom get there. We meet up and go back to this little Italian place and have dinner and a few beers. After a nice little dinner we walk back to the stadium and go in. Trey Anastasio goes on promptly at 7pm and plays till 7:35pm...THANK GOD. I am no fan of his hippie jam band stuff. I respect his musicianship, just can't deal with his music. I was sort of taken back that he did a Beatles song. I was hoping Keith would come out and bash him in the head with a telecaster but my wish didn't come true.

So anyway, Trey finishes and it's about 90 minutes until the Stones come on. The skies were threatening rain and my knees kept telling me it was going to. The Stones had a big stage set up with what appeasred to be a runway that extending almost the full length of the stadium, right thru the middle of the crowd. Our seats were pretty much straight back from the stage and 3/4 the way up the stands.

So then...boom! The stadium lights go down and the Stones hit the stage with Start Me Up. Of course the crowd goes nuts. I was incredibly impressed with how well they sounded. I wish I had brought a minirecorder as they weren't checking people coming in and the sound was absolutely perfect. I also wish I had brought a flask since the stadium sold no beer! Damn! I didn't want to get drunk, but a beer would have been nice.

After about 20 minutes into their set, you see something happening on stage. Mick comes to the microphone and says "We're dreadfully sorry but we must take a quick 10 minute break." Everyone was a little confused. Next thing you know, you see security evacuating the stage seats and the first several rows in front of the stage. Next thing you know you see cops and a bomb sniffing dog working the area around the stage. Obviously someone called in a bomb threat. After about an hour or better, te announcer came on and said the show would resume shortly and it did.

The played really well overall. Keith was very nimble, as expected Jagger was all over the place. Ronnie Wood's playing was fantastic. I have always felt he was a better player than Keith, blasphemy I know. Charlie hung behind the kit and played his odd style per usual. Halfway thru the second part of their set, a section of the stage separated from the main stage and rolled along that runway to our side of the stadium, basically putting them right under us for about 4-5 songs. That was pretty friggin' cool!

The tour shirts looked horrible so I didn't buy one. The bootlegger shirts outside sucked to so I came home with nothing but great memories of a great show. The 3 of us had a blast together from beginning to end and it was really the first time we had all hung out together. I got home around 4am and went straight to bed.

My back is still in complete disarray, hopefully it'll get better.

WASHINGTON (Oct. 7) - A bomb threat halted a Rolling Stones concert in Charlottesville, Virginia, overnight, but police found nothing, and the band returned to the stage about 45 minutes later, officials said Friday.

The threat was made in a phone call just before 9 p.m. on Thursday and was "specific to the stage area" of the concert at the University of Virginia's Scott Stadium, which was packed with 50,000 fans, said university spokeswoman Carol Wood.

I was at Macca's show the next day in D.C.....the guy directly in front of me was at the Stones show the previous night. He was describing what happened with the bomb threat...his seats were pretty close to the action that night. He was there with his two young daughters and they were terribly frightened.....but overall it was very exciting for them and he said the Stones were really on top of their game.

He also mentioned the stage setup was fantastic...with that runway effect...

NOW I wish I would've gone!

I got my bootleg in of the 10/6 show. Sounds pretty good!

Personally, I think it was probably the poorest show I have seen from them.

Granted, the acoustics in that place are terrible, but Prince sounded far better there last year.

For me, the energy and drive didn't seem there, with everything at a same pace, which is what the local critic thought too. When the backing vocalists and horns step in, it got more interesting and for me, the duet with Lisa Fisher on NTITRT was the highlight of the show.

In contrast, Miami in 02 was the best gig I had seen from them since the 80's...

Since 82 including every London gig, which being a home town gig have always been tremendous, they have never disapponted, but it just didn't get it done for me this time.


Wednesday night seemed a going thru the motions, so to speak...

Joss Stone opened and was great, but I'm biased. Totally unappreciated and ignored by the audience...that was bothered to be there at the time...

ah, this was my only time ever seeing them so they could have sat in rocking chairs and played and i would have been hppy.
