I stopped looking at that website almost exactly a year ago because the lists fluctuate based on whatever the admins feel like, as well as their general estimate of public opinion (i.e. all the people going, "flea is the best bassist of all tiem!!!1 who is larry graham who si jack bruce they shud not be abov flea!") And I also got a little annoyed that Rush kept dropping a position every month or so (from #4 to like #7 when I was looking) on the "Greatest Prog Bands" list. But yeah.

Wait, are you asking whether he's my favorite bassist? Or if he's at number 1? Because Geddy moved from #3 when I first saw the list to about #6 when I stopped. That didn't bother me. He's not the best bassist in the world. Just my personal fave.

Robert - Geddy is currently rated #1 for YYZ, whatever that is. I'm not a Rush fan so I don't know the song. I can tell you that he is a good guy, though.

Seriously? "YYZ" is at #1? Wow. When I was reading it a year ago, the top four went like this:

1. The Real Me - John Entwistle
2. Tommy the Cat - Les Claypool
3. Pulling Teeth - Cliff Burton
4. YYZ - Geddy Lee

That's cool that he's at number 1, but, I actually don't agree with that. I would say that YYZ is hands-down number 2, but #1 will ALWAYS be reserved for "The Real Me", because, really, how freaking awesome is that bassline?

I appreciate Les Claypool's playing, but to me it is a bit of a "gimmick", all of the noises and de-tuning and what-not. I can think of 200 players I would rather listen to. I'm not saying the guy's not talented, he has crazy talent, just not my bag.

I like Les, because he's a character and plays Carl Thompson basses, which I love! Yes, a lot of what he does is a gimmick but it gets him a lot of attention. You're spot on as usual, Steve!

Robert - check it out. The current listing has Geddy at #1 with YYZ. Personally, I'm a John Paul Jones guy and grew up on "The Lemon Song" which I still play and try to figure out new ways of playing. A phenominal bass solo to give a go at if you were around in 1970. I still love that baby!

I love YYZ. I was happy to see Ged on the top of the list. I do think a few basslines are overlooked though. Like Curcumstances is just as cool as YYZ. La Villa has kick *** bass all the way through. Digital Man? That should not be 134!!

Driven should not be on the live list.. sure it's a cool solo, but the end of Leave That Thing Alone on Rush In Rio is just as cool.

I find it odd how people keep going on about Entwistle's Live at Leeds tone...

To be honest, I actually think *THE* distorted bass tone to have is from John Wetton....

The sound he got from his 62' P + Hiwatt amps with King Crimson on Red is fantastic... whizzes over Entwistle's tone, IMO.

Nate, I'll send you $15 to get that CD. It's must have!!! (humming bassline in my head: doo doo do...banununna doo doo doo!)
