I notice that while playing on my 4001... the harmonics are crisp and (seemingly) as powerful as fretted notes... but on the 4003 they are somewhat muted... enough that I really can't play songs with harmonincs on that bass with the rest of the band. They fall far below the fretted notes. (with the exception of 12th fret harmonics)
-the strings are in good shape.. fairly new, and the instrument is intonated... at least "sounds good" fretted up and down the neck... no dead spots. And the pickups seem "more powerful" than the 4001. Any ideas?
One bass's harmonics over another..not so good

Vintage Pickups; a bit expensive, but much safer than unwinding, which BTW would be a waste of time on Hi-Gain Pickups. Also keep in mind, your 4003's neck may be thicker, which means more wood, which will change the bass's tone.
But my re-fitting my 4003S with VPU's changed the sound to my satisfaction.

The ideal mix leaves the bass player louder than the rest of the band put together!
