Pick-up heights

I was wondering if you could offer me some information.
I have a 1985 Model 360WB six string Mapleglo stereo model. Could you recommend what I should set the pick-up heights to for the best effect? I find that the neck pick-up has quite a boom to it when switched from the bridge to the neck pick-up. I was wondering if you could give me a measurement from the top of the pick-up to the underside of the string on the bass side and treble side. My guitar is fitted with the Hi-Gain type pick-ups. (With the studs on the top) Could you tell me if I take the measurement from the top of the stud or not. I would like to obtain a good balanced sound.
