I saw Steve in Kent tonight with his "acoustic" trio. If he is coming around your area do check it out, his guitar playing is always amazing, and he is the most humble guitarist around that I hae ever met. He offered his hand to thank me for coming out to see him!

*That* would be interesting! Now I wonder, are they going with John Silver on drums, or will they settle for Collins?

What about Anthony Mayhew?

Aw, I was just going for the cheap laffs - I didn't want to have to *work* at it!

I don't know if they could get Mayhew to give up his lucrative NZ milkman career...
If there was a way to get Collins to sit behind the drums with his mouth shut as the gods intended, it would be worth whatever admission price they decide on...

Worst decision Phil ever made was to be a frontman. One hell of a drummer, though.

I actually liked Collins' singing on "More Fool Me" (or whatever it's called) on "Selling England By The Pound"!
But I liked it because he sounded a lot like Peter Gabriel.

And he's *definitely* a great drummer!
Saw Genesis in a bar/club early on, circa whenever the first live album came out. Then much later (post Gabriel) during the Duke tour. And saw Collins with Brand X. All were freaking excellent shows/playing.
But I much prefer the old "real" Genesis. No idea about those other drummers though.

Anybody remember Anthony Phillips?

Jeff, didn't he play with Mike Rutherford?
I looked up Steve Hackett's tour schedule and he's not coming to Phoenix. Bummer...

Anthony Phillips was the guitarist before Hackett in Genesis.

Yup, good ol' Ant. I haven't pulled the trigger on the Archive set or anything like that, so I don't know of AP's playing firsthand - only that he was responsible for various things that were salvaged by the band later on. One thing that intrigues me is, IIRC, his first solo record, The Geese & The Ghost. Anyone familiar with it? Is it true (I can't recall offhand) that he was responsible for the way they handled 12 string parts between them to get that great sound?
As for Collins - I love his drumming (when he actually played drums!), and I do like his vocals (barring things like Groovy Kind Of Love). I think the one thing that bugs me is the way he tackles the Gabriel tunes (and I realize he has to make them his own, but still...): It seems he can't stand to have some vocal silence, and sometimes it can be a bit grating (lamb lies down...DOWNDOWNDOWN; tickler takes his stickleback back back back etc.). Then there's the ubiquitous "oh lawd!"

I do love Trick Of The Tail though - I'd put it right along side the best of the Gabriel years.
